Bromine is less volatile and more stable than chlorine, making it a good choice as a disinfectant in pools, spas, or hot tubs, and a sanitizing agent in drinking water systems. Like chlorine, excess amounts of bromine in water can be dangerous to health and can cause eye irritation. Daily monitoring of bromine concentration prevents damage to equipment and contributes to the optimization and efficiency of the process while providing for increased user safety.
To measure the amount of bromine in a sample DPD (N,N-diethyl-p-phenylenediamine) is added. The DPD reacts with bromine forming a pink color which is proportional to the total bromine concentration.
A variety of products are available to measure bromine including chemical test kits and photometers that use the Beer-Lambert principle of absorbance to determine the color change of bromine reacting with DPD.
Accessories include spare cuvettes and caps for photometers.
Checker HC, like a chemical test kit, is reagent based with a color change based on concentration. The handheld colorimeters, like portable and benchtop instrumentation, use the Beer-Lambert principle to determine the color change. The color change is measured by a photoelectric cell which is more accurate than subjective visual interpretation.
Portable photometers offer the convenience of measuring in the field or in the factory. The portable photometers are available as a meter only option or as a kit that includes a rugged carrying case and CAL-Check standards that are used to verify the performance of the meter, or if required, re-calibration.
